The notion of “employee engagement” (EE) has entered the management lexicon in
recent years and it has become an extremely popular phrase in organizational settings
(Attridge, 2009; Christian, Garza, & Slaughter, 2011; Giles, 2013; Shuck & Wollard,
2010). Nevertheless, it remains a relatively broad and poorly understood phenomenon.
It is therefore timely to consider the implications for Human Resource Development
(HRD) and to devote an issue of the journal to this important topic.
