A prerequisite for implementing a recognition program was to achieve buy-in and approval from human resources and the union. Based on prior attempts and learning from past obstacles, the SJMC team worked to eliminate any connection between the nurse's annual salaries and the "bonus" dollars they could obtain via a recognition program. Another motivation for developing a recognition program was related to the American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program's(R) educational criterion that promotes the continued learning of additional skills and knowledge for nurses in all settings. Offering and promoting continuous professional development are often found as part of a fulfilling work environment.7 The SJMC desired a model that would motivate and reward nurse for improving the care of their patients and also increasing accountability for their nursing practice
