Abstract – The aim of this study is to find out elementary 6-8 grades teachers' views on assessment and
evaluation methods, frequency of use and their level of adequacy in these methods. Data were collected through
a questionnaire developed by the researchers in this survey study. Population of the study is composed of 1470
primary teachers teaching at grades 6 to 8 in Erzurum city center. A sample of 474 teachers selected on the basis
of voluntary participation out of the population. At the stage of data analysis, the mean of views of teachers
about adequacy level and frequency of the use of assessment and evaluation methods were calculated. In order to
test the relationship between adequacy level and frequency of the use of assessment and evaluation methods, the
Sperman's rho was used. Furthermore, in order to analyze effects of genders and branches on adequacy level and
frequency of occurrence in assessment and evaluation, Mann Whitney U test, in order to analyze effects of years
of teaching experience Kruskal Wallis H tests were used. Results indicate that teachers feel themselves
compatible in the use traditional assessment and evaluation methods compared to alternative approaches. It is
also found that there is a positive and significant relationship between frequency of use and level of adequacy
related to assessment-evaluation methods. Moreover, it is also determined that frequency of use and level of
adequacy related to assessment-evaluation techniques and methods changes according to year of teaching,
gender and branch.
