Since many of the financial service companies did not provide some of the financial
information, we excluded them from the analyses of the current study, which reduced the
number of companies in the sample to 419 and the number of employee participants to 12,057.
Fifty-one per cent of the sample companies were in the manufacturing industry, 21 per cent
were in the information technology (IT) industry, and 28 per cent were in the service industry.
Companies listed in the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) accounted for 29 per cent
of the sample, companies listed in the Korean Securities Dealers Automated Quotations
(KOSDAQ) accounted for 31 per cent, and the other 40 per cent of companies were not publicly
traded. The average number of employees at the end of 2004 was 923. Forty-two per cent of the
companies had 100–299 employees, 41 per cent had 300–999 employees, 9 per cent had
1,000–1,999 employees, and 9 per cent had 2,000 or more employees.
