Figure, Expression & Movement
Where are the characters within the frame? How does this show their importance? What feelings are they showing? Is there a relationship involved? How are they moving and does it represent their feelings? Is the way they are expressing themselves and moving fitting for that genre?
Performance can indicate to the audience what to expect from a character.
Body Codes (how close the characters are)
Direct contact, how the character looks, head movement, whether they are facing to or away from one another, facial expressions, gestures, the way they are standing (body posture), eye contact/movement, the way they speak.
Direct Body Contact: Can reveal relationships, can show emotions (relief, anger), not always positive. Can change throughout the course of a film.
Posture/Body Language: can show a character as vulnerable, angry, confused, shy. Open or closed body language (gestures).
Eye Contact: Emotions shown (love, anger, intimidation, hatred) and time held.
Aspects of speech: Could be an accent or tone of voice. Voice changes to reflect emotion.
Characters position within the frame: Where the characters are in the frame is important because it can show the audience how important a character is, there part in the storyline & their importance in relation to other characters within the scene.
Eye contact, facial expression, head movements, and proximity of characters.
Many things we’ve looked at are non-verbal communication (the way that we move and how we present our feelings); we do this through facial expressions, body movement and language. The way that the shots are edited and filmed can add to the meaning. Setting characters in a certain way can be used to push a certain emotion. Aspects of performance, expression and movement can have a massive impact on the audience
Movement and expression have been used to create meaning for the audience, what impression is the director giving us about each of the characters?
Jack was cocky and arrogant, shown through his body language; also he was good at spontaneously devising plans that seem almost impossible.
Elizabeth was standoffish and rude, she looks down on Jack and is very elegant in terms of movement.
