Terpene hydrocarbons were less abundant than the oxygenated
compounds with the branch having the highest values followed by
the flowers and the leaves. The levels of sesquiterpenes were very
low but they were higher in the branches than in the flowers and
leaves. The analysis of these samples was undertaken during the
flowering stage when the plants could be expected to release volatiles
to attract the pollinators. Also, plants at this stage are much
more active because they have to produce certain volatiles to protect
themselves against pests and disease. The compounds that attract
pollinators are produced in larger quantities in the flowers
while the compounds that deter herbivores are produced in the
