Supportive, interactive nursing care (support
that includes coaching). The PRO-SELF
Program intervention nurse engages in the
coaching function of the program by reviewing
the content of the educational program using a
telephone interview guide during the weekly
phone calls. The patients have the opportunity
to ask questions about the pain management
program and to discuss any problems that they
may have related to their pain management. At
the end of the phone call, the PRO-SELF intervention
nurse schedules the next week's phone
call or home visit. At the home visit, the patient's
diaries, pain medication log, and side
effects checklist from the previous week are
reviewed and modifications in the treatment
plan are discussed. Patients have the opportunity
to ask questions and the key points in the
PRO-SELF: Pain Control booklet will be reviewed.
In weeks 2 and 4, patients receive a
coaching phone call during which the information
from the logs, diaries, and checklist is reviewed.
