Needs Addressed by the Studies under Investigation
Over recent decades, a remarkable decrease in the number of students who chose chemistry at upper secondary level has been observed. This may result from the fact that students find chemistry difficult; they view chemistry as abstract and irrelevant to their everyday lives and are consequently reluctant to enrol in chemistry at higher levels. In other words, the students generally have negative attitudes towards science/chemistry. As seen in Table3, six studies pointed out these issues. Chemistry educators, accordingly, need to keep up with the new reforms in chemistry education to develop ‘scientific literacy’ for all future citizens. By doing this, the problems of chemistry education can be remedied via the new teaching approach, such as the context-based learning approach. The adoption of the context-based approach may not solve all the prob-lems at once, but it will facilitate their resolution (Camp-bell and Lubben2000). At the same time the cognitive levels and styles of students should be taken into account to provide a more successful adoption and implementation of the context-based approach (Overton and Bradley 2010; Overton and Potter2011).
