This study used a cross-sectional design to assess beverage
behaviours in detail. The aim was to capture ‘usual’ beverage
behaviour by measuring each participant’s consumption
over a four-day period, including weekdays and weekends,
and asking participants not to change their behaviours in
any way during the study period. Each participant met with
a member of the study team twice: initially, to receive
detailed instructions on completing the drinks diary and to
nominate the days on which they would be completed; and
a final meeting to return it. Recruitment and participation
was staggered over a period of three months in one season,
that is, autumn, which enabled the study team to meet with
all participants individually.
