English was first brought to Ireland during the 12th century with the Norman Invasion. As with most language transitions, the transition was slow and unpopular in the beginning. The initial point of influence was the area of Dublin, called "The Pale" at the time. While the Irish regained much of their territory back before the Tudor conquests, the English language did not cease to influence the Irish dialects. By the mid 1800s, English was the main language spoken in Ireland. However, the transition from Irish to English continues today. This mixed language is known as Hiberno-English.
