In response to Adams questions, Swinn talked about his two
hours with Sam Cayhall on the previous Tuesday. He described
his physical condition, and made Sam appear a very sick man. He
was quite probably insane. He had difficulty answering even basic
questions like, “W hat did you eat for breakfast? W ho is in the cell
next to you? W hen did your wife die?” And on and on.
In Swinn s opinion, Sam Cayhall did not appreciate the fact
that he was about to die, did not understand why he was being
executed, and certainly didn’t realize he was being punished for a
crime. Mr. Cayhall’s case was one o f the worst he’d seen.
