General analysis of tower crane accidents
A total number of 38 tower crane-related fatal accidents
occurred from 2001 to 2011 (Table 4). These accidents claimed
the lives of 53 persons (workers) and 15 persons were injured,
for a total of 68 victims of tower crane-related accidents.
Categorization by work phases revealed that 36.8% (n = 14) of
all fatal accidents occurred during climbing, followed by 18.4%
(n = 7) during dismantling, and 13.2% (n = 5) during installation
(erection). The majority of the accidents (about 68.4%) occurred
during installing/dismantling while 18.4% took place during normal
operation (Fig. 3).
Table 5 shows the proportion of victims by occupation: about
57.4% (n = 39) were installation/dismantling workers on the tower
cranes, 13.2% (n = 9) were crane operators, and 11.8% (n = 8) were
tower crane-related worker such as slingers and signalers. The
remaining 17.6% (n = 12) were other construction personnel at
the construction sites, such as laborers.
The distribution of job experience of accident victims who were
tower crane installation/dismantling workers revealed that about
23.1% (n = 9), 15.4% (n = 6), 17.9% (n = 7), 23.1% (n = 9), and 20.5%
(n = 8) of the victims had experience in construction processes
involving tower cranes of less than 1 year, between 1 and less than
5 years, between 5 and less than 10 years, 10 to less than 20 years,
and over 20 years, respectively (Fig. 4).
Accident occurrences by day of the week revealed that 18.4%
(n = 7), 7.9% (m = 3), 13.2% (n = 5), 18.4% (n = 7), 10.5% (n = 4), and
31.6% (n = 12) of the accidents occurred on Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and weekends (Saturday and Sunday),
respectively.
Accident types (modes) revealed that ‘‘falls from height’’
accounted for 31.6% (n = 12) of all accidents, followed by ‘‘fracture
of the jib’’ at 21.1% (n = 8), ‘‘telescoping cage failure’’ at 18.4%
(n = 7), ‘‘falling objects’’ at 13.2% (n = 5), and ‘‘fracture of the mast’’
and ‘‘squeeze,’’ both at 7.9% (n = 3) (see Fig. 5).
Table 6 shows the distribution of causes of tower crane-related
accidents. ‘‘Violation of work procedure’’ was the most common
cause of accidents, accounting for 31.6% (n = 12) of all accidents,
followed by ‘‘insufficient safety procedure’’ at 23.7% (n = 9), ‘‘lack
of inspection or deterioration of components’’ at 10.5% (n = 4),
and ‘‘unsafe operation of tower crane’’ at 7.9% (n = 3). The factors
‘‘Signaling error,’’ ‘‘intrusion into a danger zone,’’ loosening of fastening
objects,’’ ‘‘not wearing fall protection gear,’’ and ‘‘excessive
action of the worker’’ each accounted for 5.3% (n = 2).
