Elsy's case is not unique. There are quite a few like Elsy in religious life. During formation they would be considered "good" candidates and pass through the formation years successfully and with ease. It is later in life that their inability to handle emotions and emotional turbulence in healthy and mature ways causes them confusion, distress and pain as well as a negative impact on their religious life and ministry.
Healthy emotional life is a prerequisite for a candidate to religious life or priesthood. In our experience of working with a number of candidates we have come to recognise that while many of today's candidates are beset with a lot of emotional problems they are also open to talk about them and eager to work on their unhealed emotional areas provided opportunities are given them. Today there is certainly greater awareness among formation guides about the emotional problems of their candidates of them are willing to help the candidates.
