Kanner designed the ‘Hassles and Uplifts Scale’. This scale consists of 117 daily life events which
could cause stress. The researchers also believed that positive life events could reduce the impact of
daily hassles, so they also designed a questionnaire of 135 daily items that are likely to cheer people
up. To calculate a score, the participant is given the scale, and has to rate the daily hassles that have
applied to them in the past month based on their severity. The idea of this was to measure how
positive events could affect a person’s life, and to balance these measurements with the effects of
negative ‘hassles’. The scale can be adapted to fit particular groups of people.
