Different theorists have proposed different stages in the process of perception, with some offering more stages and some fewer than the ones in the version we are using here. Some theorists have hypothesized that the most significant stage in perception occurs at the sense organ itself--at the eye, ear, or skin. Others have proposed that the most significant stage isi in the brain at the semantic-memory level.
