A cause for concern is asset value declines in the consumer mortgage market. Due to the proliferation of nontraditional mortgage products, the traditional mortgage market may suffer asset price deflation due to growing defaults. There are now indications that that housing market is cooling and mortgage application volumes have declined. The supply of homes on the market is rising and confidence among homebuilders has slipped. Lenders are not expecting material asset price declines, but will want to maintain vigilant portfolio management practices.
