This definition implies that there are many different kinds of learning but also many different
sources and ways of providing it. Too commonly these alternatives are ignored. Traditionally
syllabuses are made and textbooks written to conform to these syllabuses. More recently national
and international curriculum projects have been initiated. Materials (often very good materials)
emerge from these projects and are adopted by schools. But these activities usually tend to be
planned centrally with little reference to the average teacher in school or the needs of local communities.
