Our results suggest that Y. lipolytica could be developed as a
source of SCO for biodiesel production using the ‘‘waste’’ crude
glycerol generated by biodiesel synthesis. TAG synthesis was significantly
higher under nitrogen-limiting conditions, but Y. lipolytica
did synthesize and accumulate lipids when grown in rich media
with all the carbon sources tested. Further research is underway to
optimize TAG production by Y. lipolytica, by defining the type and
quantity of carbon, and the minimal amount of nitrogen, required
to achieve the greatest cell biomass density and TAG accumulation
