Many historians work entirely within the cultural contexts in which they grew up, or in very similar
contexts. They do not have to confront the daunting prospect of human difference that is anthropology's
special concern; they do not have to justify their interests on theoretical grounds, because they address
national publics already curious about their own pasts.
