NARRATOR: Khashand and Olivia are fourth graders at CES. They are in the hallway getting ready for lunch and recess.
OLIVIA (sounding distressed): Oh, no!
KHASHAND: What’s the matter?
OLIVIA (frantically searching her pockets): I have lost my lunch money! I will have nothing to eat!
KHASHAND: Calm down. It will be okay. How much money did you lose?
OLIVIA (calming down): Three dollars!
KHASHAND: I found three folded up dollar bills in the hallway this morning. I was going to take them to the office. I’ll bet they are yours. Here. (He hands her the folded up dollar bills.)
OLIVIA (sounding relieved): Yes! They were folded up in my pocket. Those do look like mine. Now I have enough to eat lunch today. Thank you so much!
KHASHAND: No problem.
OLIVIA: You know, you could have kept the three dollars and I would never have known.
KHASHAND: Yeah, but I wouldn’t have felt good about that. It wasn’t my money, and I knew someone must be looking for it. I know I’d be upset if I lost my money. I wouldn’t want someone else to be upset or to go hungry because they didn’t have their lunch money.
OLIVIA: You are a good person Khashand. I’m glad you are in our class!
KHASHAND: Okay! Let’s not get all mushy about it! Let’s just hurry up and line up for recess!
Moral: It’s always best to be honest.
