I share some of the blame here for my participation in garden-makeover programmes, where larger plants are needed to make on-screen impact. But I know, as a gardener, that the smaller the plant, the more rapidly it will establish itself in garden soil, and I have long since learnt the hard way that the bigger the tree or shrub, the longer it will take to settle in and – unfortunately – the more desirable it will be in the eyes of a garden thief.
