The transportation sector is responsible for 52 percent of Washington’s releases of carbon dioxide—the leading global warming gas. Cars and light trucks—such as pickups, minivans and SUVs—are the most important sources of global warming pollution in the transportation sector, responsible for nearly half of all transportation sector emissions and about one-fifth of Washington’s total emissions of global warming pollution.
