minimum, optimum, and maximum temperatures for cuphea
seed germination (Table 2). The minimum temperature for
seed germination varied between 5.7 and 10.0 ◦C (Fig. 1)
and resembles that of warm-season crops, such as corn or
sorghum (Woltz and Tekrony, 2000). Thus, cuphea should not
be planted until the soil reaches 10 ◦C, which in east-central
North Dakota would generally be after 20 May. Optimum seed
germination temperatures, as estimated by the quadratic
model fluctuated between 20.4 and 20.9 ◦C and for third-order
polynomial model, were 18.5, 19.0, and 22.0 ◦C for seed
produced in 2004, 2005, and 2006, respectively. Maximum
temperatures for cuphea seed germination as estimated by
the quadratic models fluctuated between 33.1 and 37.2 ◦C
(Table 2), estimation of maximum temperatures with thirdorder
polynomial models was not very useful so they are
not included. Germination differences from seeds harvested
in different years can be expected since seed germination
and vigor are affected by environmental conditions after
physiological maturity at least until seed has dried down
sufficiently (Tekrony, 2003).
3.2. Germination rate
Linear-model estimates of critical temperatures based on germination
rate varied among years (Table 3). The linear function
for germination rate averaged across yearswas not significant.
The rate of germination was significantly reduced below
18 ◦C which will increase the time between planting and emergence.
Longer exposure to below-optimal soil temperatures
may lead to increased seedling exposure to pathogens in the
soil, leading to decreased emergence. Seeds reached 70% germination
in only 4 d at temperatures between 18 and 24 ◦C,
but required 12 d to reach 70% germination at 10 ◦C (data not
shown).
