We chose to break with tradition and applied Fermat's Principle of Least Time. when the initial results proved promising, we felt obligated to explain why Fermat's Principle worked. We also had to explain why the Rolling Ball Theory served us so well in the past. In the process, we learned that Least Time--Maximum Probability is a fundamental principle: not only is it consistent it with mainstream science, it also yields new insight in many other branches of Physics, such as Optics, the Theory of Relativity, and the Theory Quantum Physics [1,2].In rare moments of courage we even dare say that Descartes' Scientific Method is a subset of the Least Time --Maximum Probability Principle.
We first explain the Least Time --Maximum Probability Principle and then show how we use this principle to explain lightning. Using the theory, we describe what will happen if a lightning storm passes over a tall structure. the existence of lethal and safe zones is discussed next. In conclusion we compare the RBT with the LT-MT theories. We present the verification and validation of the LT-MP theories in Paper #32-TC9-9.
