use pull quotes to break up text. These are quotes that are taken from the text and enlarged so that they stand out from the rest of the normal sized text
use sidebars for additional information that enhances the main article but it is not a crucial part of it
use images to break up text and introduce a graphical element into the Web page. However, make sure that any images are relevant to the text, give them clear captions that are mot too large - they should enhance the text, not overshadow it
use CSS formatting (stylesheets) to create latouts that can look more like desktop publishing
use 'Next Page' and 'Previous Page' links. This can be used to break up documents, but always make sure that the links go to the correct pages
