Photo-elicitation techniques were first employed by Collier (1957) to study mental health issues in changing communities in Canada. Several approaches of photo elicitation have been developed since Collier's initial work, which can be grouped into two: (1) showing respondents the photographs taken by others (Harper, 1987, 2001) and (2) allow- ing respondents to take the photographs themselves (Clark-Ibanez, 2004: Samuels,2004).
