II. NANOPARTICLES
Several practices have been put on the table for further enhancing the physicochemical characteristics of
nanoparticles, such as their size, surface morphology, size distribution or the encapsulation efficiency of the loaded
drugs. The use of an organic solvent, effective for the modulation of nanoparticle characteristics and safe for human
health, is a central matter of the before mentioned studies. Considering this issue, we investigated the influence of the
solvent type in our oil-in-water nanoparticle emulsion method, using two solvents acceptable for use in medicinal
applications, acetone and ethyl acetate. The major difference in physical properties of these solvents is that ethyl
acetate is a partially water-soluble solvent (8.7% (v/v) at 20oC) whereas acetone is a completely water soluble
solvent (infinitely at 25oC). The solvent evaporation procedure took place inside an incubator shaker (27°C and
100rpm) at atmospheric conditions, for both solvent systems.
