1. Attempt to determine which is the student's dominant hand by observing his or her preferences when reaching for objects.
2. Assist the student in grasping a knife with the dominant hand using physical guidance as needed. Reduce any assistance as allowable.
3. Place a small amount of honey on some toast. Guide the student to place the knife on the edge of the honey and move it laterally forward along the bread. In this step the instructor holds the toast and rotates it as needed.
4. Repeat Step 3, modifying the action to guiding the student toward holding the toast in the nondominant hand. Physical guidance should be reduced to a gestural level. Some step-by-step verbal prompting may be needed and should be gradually reduced until only the total request is necessary.
5. Modify Step 4, using softened butter.
6. Modify Step 4, using jelly. (Note. This may prove too difficult based on the consistency of both the bread and the jelly. If so, just continue with butter.)
