Take a tour through the unique 19th century architectural pearl. A guide will take visitors through the building, tell about its vibrant history and every-day operations, as well as show what it looks like behind-the-scenes.
The grandiose building was unveiled in 1863, and was originally constructed and utilized as the Riga City Theater building according to the design of architect Ludwig Bohnstedt (St Petersburg). Unfortunately, the building suffered a fire in 1882, which caused major damage. The building’s reconstruction process was overseen by Riga’s chief architect Reinholds Smelings.
The building itself was handed over to the Latvian National Opera in 1919, and in 1922 the first professional ballet ensemble in Latvia joined the opera troupe.
