The effect of alum on NH3 emission from chicken excreta
was estimated in experiment 1. In accordance
with previous studies (Moore et al. 1996, 1999; Do
et al. 2005; Choi and Moore 2008a), alum supplementation
significantly suppressed NH3 emission from
chicken excreta. Under the experimental conditions,
NH3 emission rate was decreased by 73.0 and 75.8% in
2 and 4% alum supplementations, respectively. The
suppressed ammonia emission contributes to the lower
atmosphere NH3 concentration in broiler house. The
atmosphere NH3 concentration in chicken house with
alum-treated litter was 30% lower than that of control.
