To produce both topical and systemic effects,
fluoride supplements should be allowed to contact the teeth before being swallowed.
Liquid drops can be placed directly on the child’s teeth or in a small amount of water.
Because fluoride absorption is reduced to 60% or 70% when given with milk or formula,
it is recommended that it be given 20 minutes before a feeding.
Older children should chew and swish the tables or allow them to dissolve in the mouth before swallowing,
to prolong the contact of the fluoride with the teeth.
Supplements should be continued until 14 to 16 years of age,
when the third-molar crowns are completely calcified.
