On the postpartum floor, a brief screening interview was conducted to assess patients’ eligibility for the study. Eligible participants were women who were hospitalized for the delivery of a live-born, singleton infant, who self-reported their race/ethnicity, and were comfortable responding in English or Spanish. The 45-minute structured interview assessed demographicandhealthservicecharacteristics, reproductivefactors, andseveraldimensionsof interpersonal processes of care. Information
about use of prenatal care and delivery characteristics was abstracted from the medical record. The research assistants who conducted the interviews and performed the medical record review were trained at the same time, used the same procedure manual, and were supervised by the study investigators.
