Vygotsky concentrated on the ways in which learning is a social process. We learn through interaction with others, both of the same age, and of a higher age and evelopmental level. This process operates through scaffolding in the zone of proximal development. The ZPD is the gap between what a pélson is able to do alone and what s/he can do with the help of someone more knowledgeable or skilled than him/herself. Scaffolding refers to the way others can help us to bridge that gap.
