Le Blanc-Louvry and colleagues23 showed that mechanical
massage of the abdominal wall after colectomy resulted in
decreased postoperative pain and ileus. However, a larger trial at
the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, Ann Arbor, Michigan
(N ¼ 202)7 failed to show a reduction in the use of narcotics postoperatively
but did show a reduction in the unpleasantness of pain.
Taylor and colleagues24 evaluated 105 women who underwent
abdominal laparotomy and received massage and vibration therapy
postoperatively. In this study, mild improvements in pain scores did
not reach statistical significance. In 1 of the largest studies
(N ¼ 605) of massage for postoperative pain, Mitchinson and
colleagues25 showed statistically significant reductions in pain
intensity, pain unpleasantness, and anxiety
