Due to lack of funds and scarcity of space, most of the
developing countries cannot afford to construct centralized
sewage treatment plants (STPs) everywhere. Hence there is need
to develop ecologically safer and economically viable onsite
domestic wastewater treatment technologies (Kumar et al.,
2014). Traditionally, the conventional septic tank (CST) has been
the most commonly used anaerobic system for onsite treatment of
domestic wastewater due to its economic affordability, structural
and functional simplicity, and electricity-free operation. Shortage
of power is a major concern in most of the rural areas of developing
countries (Tait et al., 2013).
