Dried leaves of Psidium guajava obtained from Botanical garden of Department of
Biological Sciences, Bayero University, Kano, were extracted using ethanol as
extraction solvent via percolation and Soxhlet method at temperature of 45 and
60°C. The leaf extracts were subjected to phytochemical screening in order to
detect the presence of secondary metabolites. The extracts were further tested for
antibacterial activity against clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia
coli, Salmonella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus using
disc diffusion and broth dilution techniques. The results of phytochemical
screening indicated the presence of alkaloids, tannins, reducing sugars, saponins
and glycosides in all the three extracts. The result of antibacterial activity
indicated that only Salmonella spp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were sensitive to
all the extracts
