Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has opened a new rapid exit taxiway as part if its efforts to enhance airfield safety and operational efficiency.
According to owners, Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL), the addition of rapid exit taxiway N5 for Runway 09 earlier "marks yet another milestone" achieved by the airport in its bid to reduce the runway occupancy time (ROT) of landing aircraft.
Capable of accommodating Code F aircraft sich as the A380, the new 415 metre long taxiway is located on the northern side of primary Runway 09-27 and will reduce the arrival ROT by 9 to 10 seconds.
MIAL adds that the new rapid exit taxiway "will ensure optimum utilisation" of runway 09 and ensure that it will have a similar handling capacity to Runway 27.
The first flight to utilise this taxiway earlier today was a Jetlite B737 aircraft at 11.37 hours, and in typical aviation style, fire crews were on hand to give it a water cannon salute.
