both experiments. These roots were cut into small fragments (1 cm)
and stained with Tryptan blue following a modified protocol from
Brundrett et al. (1984). Stained roots were mounted on slides and
inspected for signs of AM colonization (arbuscules, hyphae, vesicles
and spores). For positive identification of AM colonization,
we required at least 2/4 visual markers (see above). We detected
evidence of mycorrhizal colonization by AM fungi in all of the
subsamples examined. There was no evidence of mycorrhizal colonization
in non-mycorrhizal controls.
