From the Great Depression of the 1930s through the 1950s, the Young Men's Christian Association/Young Women's Christian Association (YMCA/YWCA)and the Young Men's Hebrew Association/Young Women's Hebrew Association (YMHA/YWHA) provided clean, comfortable accommodations at a reasonable price and were a known quantity for people traveling to a strange city. Many such facilities offered gymnasium and pool amenities at no additional charge. The accommodations were basic, but they served their purpose until better accommodations could be secured or the traveler moved on. Since the growth of budget accommodations such as Budgetel and Motel 6, the Y movement has closed many facilities. The few that are still in existence are found in large cities such as New York and Houston.
