Another possibility to explain the increased growth
of shrimp in polyculture is based on the nutritional
values contained in the food. As conservative
estimates, typical tilapia assimilation efficiency is
70% for protein and 51% for total energy (Bowen,
1982). Therefore 30% of the protein and 49% of the
energy would be available to the shrimp from tilapia
feces. Finally, this study shows that the concepts of
polyculture can be utilized in the design of shrimptilapia
farms under intensive or semi-intensive
recirculation systems
