Supervolcanoes
What will happen if one of them erupts?
If a supervolcano erupts,
• The lave will wipe out everything for 100 km around the volcano.
• 50 cm of ash will fall in an hour.
• The dust and gas will bloke out the sun for a long time.
• The temperature will drop.
• Plants and animals will die.
• Many people won’t survive
Calderas or ‘supervolcanoes’ are huge volcanoes that can cause worldwide damage and climate if they erupt. The good news is this only happens every 100,000 years. The bed news is there are at least two sleeping supervolcanoes that are ready to wake up soon – toda, on the lndonesian island of Sumatre, and Yellowstone in the USA.
