One of the reasons is that it causes children young and old back pains and problems. “Kids who wear their backpacks over one shoulder- as many do, because it looks better or just feels easier- may end up leaning to one side to offset the extra weight. They might develop lower and upper back pain and strain their shoulders and neck” (Kidshealth.org). This is true for many children. “Doctors say they are seeing a growing number of children suffering serious back pain as the result of carrying around overloaded backpacks. Because children’s spines are still growing many fears the heavy packs and tilted gait they cause could lead to long term back problems” (Montclair.edu). “According to data from the United States Product Safety Commission, over the period from 1994-2000 more than 23,000 youths ages 6 to 18 were treated for backpack related injuries, such as contusions, sprains, and strains to the back and shoulders, and fractures” (Procon.org). Children are suffering as a result of heavy back packs full of textbooks and many believe that this is a problem that can be changed.
