Therefore, a reduced detection of volatiles is often due to the
lack of specific anatomical structures for volatile oil storage
(Scragg, 1997). In the case of DO and RR basil calli, the higher level
of monoterpene hydrocarbons in comparison with the other basil
cultures might be related to the uncompleted unorganised tissue
which contains at the same time both specialised structures and
ordinary cells (Fig. 3).
