Along with such impressive economic growth and the interest in
a better quality of life, there is a growing demand for Koreans to enjoy
their leisure and holidays. There has been a dramatic growth in the
number of Koreans going abroad. In 1989, following the complete
easing of the Korean government's restriction on outbound travel,
Korean outbound travel began to increase remarkably. In the first
year of liberalisation, it increased by 67.3 percent to 1.2 million. Since
then, increases in the numbers of trips overseas made by Koreans
have been constant at about 37.3 per cent per year to reach over 3
million trips in 1994 (Korea National Tourism Organization (KNTO),
1995).
