OK, I'm no expert but, from watching lots of animal planet (& Lion King otherwise known to my 3yo as Rar!), here's my best guess: 1st lions hunt at night because they are much harder to see in the dark and it is much cooler to run around at night than in the heat of the day, when they could be sheltered in the shade or a cave somewhere.
2nd, I'm guessing that when Scar allowed the hyenas to overrun the pridelands, he disrupted the circle of life because there was no order and the other animals were hunted indiscriminately and not given enough time to reproduce, thus continuing the circle of life. Usually predators watch for the weakest - sick or lame or young - and hunt them, which allows the strong to survive and reproduce. This did not occur once the hyenas came into the picture as they were in the same hunting grounds as every other predator, so that demand outweighed supply.
This same principle applies to overfishing, etc and causes animal species to become extinct.
Beyond that, I recommend enjoying the movie and stop over-analysing it. It's a cartoon!
