Why I Love Thailand
by Sara Dorsey, Greenheart Travel Teach Abroad Specialist
When I returned from Thailand in 2010 I sat down to write about my experiences. I started with “Thailand is now probably my favorite country in the world, and I am seriously considering moving there. It’s the first place I’ve been that really made me feel like I needed to be there. The food, the people, the buildings, the smells…everything about the country spoke to me.” Now as I sit here in 2013, having been to 33 countries, Thailand still ranks as my number #1. Here is why:
The food
Thai food is by far my favorite kind of food, and in Thailand, you can get the best pad thai or green curry you’ve ever tasted – for less money than a coffee from Starbucks. Thai food is spicy and packs intense flavor, so there is always something unexpected and new to try. The grasshoppers were pretty tasty too!

The beaches
I mean, come on! Just look at this!

The temples
Thailand isn’t just a beach goer’s paradise. It’s also rife with culture. Even the smallest towns in Thailand have amazingly ornate and beautiful temples and ruins to explore.

The people
Thailand is known as “The Land of Smiles” and it’s with great reason. The left photo is of Thai women I met on the street in Bangkok who were selling things to tourists. I was struggling to sew a patch onto my backpacking backpack, and they stopped to help me sew it on. I ended up buying a bracelet from them, but they really just wanted to be friendly and helpful! Thai people will go out of their way to be friendly.
