The use of heparinized saline for flushing CVADs has the
potential for causing erroneous laboratory results when blood
is drawn from a central line that was previously flushed with
heparinized saline. Heparin-contaminated blood samples are
possible even with stringent sampling techniques. Thus, the
use of heparin for flushing could lead to incorrect interventions
based on inaccurate lab results.
