All p values reported
are two tailed and a p value of 0.05 is considered
statistically significant. Each infant was classified
by SEJ and AJD as having ‘definite’, ‘clinical’ or
‘no’ sepsis, based on the following: definite sepsis
was defined as a positive sterile site (blood and/or
CSF) culture with a recognised pathogen or culture
of a potential contaminant (e.g. coagulase negative
staphylococci) in association with clinical and
laboratory evidence (immature to total neutrophil
[I/T] ratio >0.2 AND CRP >10 mg/L) of sepsis; and
clinical sepsis was an episode lacking positive
cultures, associated with clinical features of sepsis
and I/T ratio >0.2 AND CRP >10 mg/L AND antibiotic
treatment for 5 days.
