Capelin embryos were exposed to the WSF of the Kobbe crude oil
from the Goliat field in the southwest Barents Sea using oiled rock
columns (Carls et al., 1999) or clean seawater (control). This experimental
set-up mimicked the release of oil from sediment following
a spill, with a decrease in aqueous PAH concentrations and a change
in the relative abundance of PAH compounds over time. Gravel of
approximately 1–8 mm in diameter were washed, dried and mixed
with crude oil at concentrations of 3, 6 and 12 g crude oil/kg gravel
corresponding to low (L), medium (M) and high (H) oil treatments,
respectively. Oiled gravels were dried at room temperature for 24 h
