2.3 Important Parameters in Microwave-Assisted Extraction and Mechanism of Action
The optimization of MAE conditions has been studied in several applications. The ef fi ciency of the process is directly related to the operation conditions selected. Special attention should be given to usually studied parameters that may in fl uence the performance of MAE such as solvent composition, solvent-to-feed ratio, extraction temperature and time, microwave power, and the characteristics of the matrix including its water content. Comprehension of the effects and interactions of these factors on the MAE process is significant. Thus, this topic emphasizes some of the parameters that affect MAE, presenting guidelines regarding the selection of proper operation conditions, and also discusses the interaction between these parameters.
